Adrian writes:

The friendship between WH Auden and Benjamin Britten led to one of the most interesting artistic collaborations of the 1930s. But their friendship came under severe strain in New York in the early 1940s - strain that was reflected in Auden’s poems ‘Underneath the Abject Willow’ and ‘Song for St Cecilia’. Britten, returning to England, adapted Auden’s ‘Song’ as the libretto for his ‘Hymn to St Cecilia’. Against this background, Adrian Barlow traces the significance of New York in the lives of both poet and composer.
